Makita LS1216L Sliding Compound Miter Saw - Taking Finish Work To The Next Level

Any professional who wants to do the best work needs the best tools to do it. For the finish carpenter who wants his work to stand above the competition, the Makita LS1216L sliding compound miter saw just might be the best choice for a job site saw.

Makita Saw Blade

The LS1216L is one of Makita's impressive new generation of sliding compound miter saws. It comes with a long list of state-of-the-art features for ease of use, versatility,  increased cutting capacity and power.

Makita Saw Blade

Start with the capacity: With its retractable rear guard and the triple gear drive system that puts motor housing higher than on most other miter saws, the Makita LS1216L Sliding Compound Miter Saw will handle 8" crown molding and up to 6-1/2" baseboard,  nested vertically.

It has 5-1/2" tall adjustable sliding fences for not only supporting tall stock, but also for more precise miter and bevel cuts. The upper portion of the fences slide outward to give you clearance for bevel cuts, while the lower portion slides inward to stabilize and support the material better.

The four rail slide system gives you rigidity and accuracy in your cuts all the way out to 15"  at 90° and 10-1/2" at 45°. These round rails ride on six ball bearings for smooth, solid and accurate sliding action.

The vertical vise/clamp is double-jointed to give you more reach (and versatility) when clamping your material. And the vise can be mounted on either side.

The list of features making this saw easy to use in equally impressive. First of all, you can miter 0º to 52º left and 0º to 60º right with positive stops at 0º, 15º, 22.5º, 31.6º and 45º, both left and right. And the miter lock is an easy "one-touch" for quick, easy and accurate adjustments.

The LS1216L can perform bevel cuts anywhere from 0º to 45º, both left and right, with positive stops at 0º, 22.5º, 33.9º and 45º in either direction. The dual handle bevel lock is easily accessible with front AND top facing scales for increased precision in adjustments.

The laser guide is also well thought out, with its own switch so you can turn it on and set up your cut without the blade turning. And it has micro-adjustments for precise settings, right or left of blade cutting.

The replaceable stainless steel miter scale is easy to read and the blade guard is clear for better visibility. And the large, easy to grip, ergonomically designed horizontal D-handle is rubberized for more comfort and has an extra-large trigger switch.

Then there's the power: A 15 amp electronically controlled motor that won't bog down and will maintain constant speed under load.

For a big saw, the 12" Makita LS1216L is surprisingly compact, thanks in part to the staged slide mechanism; the two pairs of support rails add up to give you the full slide to cut that 15" crosscut. And at 52 pounds, it's truly portable.

In the area of versatility, the LS1216L doesn't fall short, either. This sliding compound miter saw, unlike some of the high quality saws on the market, will take any 12" blade with a standard 1" bore. Which means you can use it to cut almost any material, from the softest woods to plastics to non-ferrous metals, just by changing the blade.

Makita LS1013 Review - Read This Before You Buy the Makita LS1013 Compound Miter Saw

The Makita LS1013 is a dual sliding compound miter saw that packs a huge amount of power into a compact machine. Using a horizontal double-rail system, both of which are self-cleaning and slide on linear ball bearings, the saw is incredibly stable. Because the bevel twists forty-five degrees in each direction, there is a huge range of cutting room and a great deal of versatility about which cuts can be done.

Makita Saw Blade

The vertical grip design and the thumb-activated safety switch and paddle trigger make the Makita LS1013 very easy and comfortable when using. Although not a horizontal D-handle, which is a bit more ergonomic, the handle lets the saw be used with the right or left hand and the trigger is able to be squeezed anytime despite what way you're gripping the handle.

Makita Saw Blade

As for sawing capacity, the Makita LS1013 has the capability to crosscut a 2x12 at 90 degrees, but the rather great feature comes in its depth capacity. Most saws are not able to cut a piece of 4x4 material, but this one can. That is incredibly handy if you're working with something such as a deck or cabinet. Because of the huge table on this saw, you will have the ability to make wide crosscuts, another feature that is highly useful. The Makita LS1013 bevels 52-degrees right and 47-degrees to the left with 9 positive stops on the bevel to allow for easy access to most often used miters, and there's even a miter lock with a screw handle.

It is imperative that the saw considers safety also, which is exactly what the Makita LS1013 does. There is a soft start and electric brake to ensure you know how to quickly and simply work the saw. The pivot fence makes it possible for you to support large stock or to flip it back for typical cuts, and there is a work clamp so that you have the capability to make accurate cuts on small materials without endangering your finger being sliced off by the blade. In addition, there's a depth-stop mechanism so that you're ready if you are forced to to make some quick cuts while at work, and a release safety button to pull out and lock the saw off when it's not in use while you are at home.

Track Saws - Reviewing the Guide Rail Systems of Festool, Makita, and Dewalt

Despite taking an idea as simple as a circular saw riding on a rail, the track saw or guide rail system is anything but simple. Reinventing and completely optimizing cutting accuracy, precision, and versatility, this cutting system is unlike any other and, accordingly, offers users some pretty robust advantages over other cutting systems.

Makita Saw Blade

The plunge-cut circular saw and guide rail system offers smooth pivoting action, minimized blade exposure, and the capacity to create precise cuts from any point on a panel (something ordinary saws could never do and should never attempt); this handful of innovations renders it one of the most versatile cutting tools in the industry. In fact, the system allows users to perform almost any cutting application from ripping sheet goods, cross-cutting, and creating straight edges in rough stock - to jointing boards and creating openings in panels and in sections of flooring, cabinets and doors. Essentially, the track saw is like the supersweet-hybrid result of a seriously awesome panel saw and the industry's best circular saw ever, and, although it's been enlightening users for almost half a century, the track saw remains one of the most exciting innovators in the production industry.

Makita Saw Blade

Developed by Germany's Festool around forty years ago, still, only a few manufacturers list a tack saw in their power tool line-ups; this, of course, leaves that monopoly (or, perhaps, triopoly) in the capable hands of Festool, Dewalt, and Makita. Determining which one of these track saws is better than the other, though, is not so easy as you might think - and although I'm partial to Festool to a fault (but not really "a fault" as Festool truly does no wrong, but I digress), the Makita and Dewalt models have their advantages too. Advantages, in fact, that make it increasingly difficult to ascertain a clear front-runner among the three manufacturers. In the interest of being honest, I believe the best track saws and the best rail guide systems still come from their birthplace - Festool, but let me lay down some info to help you discover your own track sawing soul mate:

Dewalt's DWS520SK is a 6.5" plunge-cut circular saw with a 59"guide. It's a zero-clearance cutting system for the straightest, most precise splinter-free cuts, and with an accurate on-track cut depth indicator (which accounts for the thickness of the track your using), users can easily hit precise cut depths (max cut: 2-1/8" at 90°, 1-5/8" at 45º). The saw additionally boasts a continuous anti-kickback mechanism and riving knife to reduce kickback while working, and with a smooth, low-profile blade guard, the saw is can also and easily be used is small or awkward spaces. The saw boasts a straight plunge mechanism for ergonomic comfort on the job, and with a 12A, 1300W motor with 1,750 - 4,000 RPM, the circ saw can chomp through hardwoods up to 2-1/8" thick. The thing is additionally equip with a universal 1-1/4" dust port which, when coupled with a vacuum, collects about 90% of the dust and debris produced while cutting.

The DWS520SK includes the saw and guide (of course), and a kit box, blade wrench, and a 48-tooth ultra-fine finishing blade. If you require a little more than 59" in the guide rail department, Dewalt also makes a 102" track. Their DWS520LK comes with that 102" track, and their DWS520CK includes both the 59" and 102" saw tracks. Of course, you may also purchase the tracks or other accessories for the saw and track separately.

Makita's SP6000K1 system is built around a 6.5" plunge-cut circular saw and 55" guide rail. The guide rail system and circ saw base are designed to interact with one another resulting in perfectly smooth, absolutely precise straight and bevel cuts, and because the tool's electronic speed control maintains constant speed under load, the saw delivers splinter free cuts with an honestly unbelievable finish. The saw additionally features variable speeds ranging from 2,000 - 5,000 RPM optimizing its overall versatility and providing the perfect options for each application. The thing also boasts a big-ol' cutting capacity of 2-3/16" at 90° and 1-9/16" at 45° and a bevel capability of -1° to 48° with positive stops at 22.5° and 45°. All this power and all these capabilities require a bit of precaution, accordingly, the saw also has a built-in current limiter to eliminate motor burnout and a soft start feature to ensure an always smooth performance.

Boasting magnesium components the SP6000K1 is lightweight, durable, and ultra well-balanced, and offering seriously close to the wall cutting, the saw offers extended applications. Also featuring a smooth plunge release for user comfort, and, perhaps one of the saw's very best features, dual front and rear bevel supports to hold the blade in position (so you don't have to), the thing provides incredibly smooth and dead-on accurate bevel cuts. For the sake of overall awesomeness, the saw also provides simple depth adjustment, a depth stop, super-fast blades changes, an electronic brake for your safety and productivity, a 1-7/16" rear dust port designed to push material away from the operator (and can also connect to a collection system), and a saw base that is compatible with competing guide rail systems.

And, before I really outstay my welcome with this tool, let me also say that Makita's saw is seriously comfortable to operate, includes a high-performance 48-tooth carbide tipped blade, a hex blade wrench, stackable tool case, and, of course, the saw and 55" guide rail. That saw and rail and, if you need something bigger, a 118" rail (part number 194367-7) can be purchased separately.

As for the Festool, I will try to keep my accolades and my word-count under control, but, as they do offer two choices, I think that merits at least a few more lines. To begin, Festool's 561174 TS 55 system is built around a law-defying 6.25" circular saw and a 55" guide rail. The circ saw itself is lightweight, simple to maneuver, and offers the kind of accuracy that makes traditional circular saws feel bad about themselves. The saw's dust mechanism is designed to direct dust and debris away from the tool, operator, and projects and may also be connected to Festool's unbeatable, tool-triggered dust collection system, and with the FastFix blade system, blade changes are both faster and simpler to perform. The tool's sophisticated electronics maintain speed under load and offer variable speeds from 2,000 - 5,200 RPM ensuring you can match the tool's performance to each material and application - of course, these electronics also protect the tool from current and thermal overload.

The TS 55 additionally offers simple and accurate depth adjustments allowing users to expose only the necessary portions of the blade, and with a smooth plunge action for interior cuts and a spring-loaded, retractable riving knife reducing kickback and improving controlability, the saw delivers unmatched results in overall smoothness, precision, and simplicity. The saw produces a gorgeous finish, in fact, a splinter-free finish on both sides of the cut saving you time and material and, altogether, the system includes the saw, 55" guide rail, a 48-tooth carbide blade, limit stop, plug-it power cord, splinterguard, and one of Festool's well known systainers (the stackable, interlocking case).

As for the bigger saw, Festool's 561188 TS 75 shares the TS 55's best features, you know, like mind-bending accuracy, precision and smoothness of cut, variable speeds, overload protection, the FastFix blade system, riving knife, and etc - but, as Festool's most powerful plunge cut saw, the TS 75 8.25" circular saw takes the concept of high-performance to another level breaking all existing molds for precision power and high-performance. In fact, even with the capacity to cut material up to 2-3/4" thick (which also allows users to stack sheet goods for multiple identical simultaneous cuts), the saw still manages to leave a splinter-free, silky smooth, and burn-free cutting edge. It's amazing. The TS 75 additionally includes a 75" guide rail, limit stop, plug-it power cord, 36-tooth blade, slipclutch, splinterguard, and that smart systainer. Festool additionally offers tons of guide rails (up to 197") and other accessories to spice up your system.

Cut Moldings and Trim Like An Expert: The Makita LS1040 Compound Miter Saw

Every carpenter and woodworker I know appreciates the chance to buy a new tool. In my case, I'd been looking for a reason to buy a compound miter saw for years. A few months ago, my wife and I decided to undertake a major home remodeling project that required replacing a number of crown moldings as well as interior framing around windows.

Makita Saw Blade

I quickly realized that the tool of choice would be a compound miter saw, especially when tackling the crown moldings. I had suffered through a bookcase project a year earlier, using a manual miter box and back saw to produce the crown molding trim on several built-in bookcases. There was no way I wanted to repeat that experience! My wife, eager to see the remodeling project underway, readily agreed to a new saw purchase.

Makita Saw Blade

A Saw By Any Other Name
Miter (or mitre) saws are designed to make angled cuts in wood stock by pulling a circular blade down in a plunging motion. This action gives the saws their nicknames of "drop saws" or "chop saws." A further refinement, the compound miter saw, can cut both an angle and a bevel simultaneously, removing the need for a "work-and-turn" motion when making an angled cut that will smoothly join to another piece of trim or molding.

The double action cut is possible because the motor is attached to a pivoting post, which allows the blade to swing both side to side and at an angle to the workpiece. Think about a picture frame: the end of each piece of stock is cut at a 45-degree angle, but the cut is also made at a bevel from front to back, so the matching face is hidden, and the joint is neat.

Determining What You Need
It's important to consider the types of jobs you'll be doing when choosing a miter saw. A larger blade can of course handle larger stock. I knew that for the most part I would be working on projects like crown molding, picture frames, and baseboard trim, so a 10-inch blade would be large enough for my purposes.

I researched a number of miter saws, and ended up choosing the Makita LS1040. This model is very light for a mid-sized miter saw, weighing only about 24 pounds. One reason the saw is so light is that the base and side rails are machined from aluminum, which gives it light weight, but also means that the saw will be durable. Because we're remodeling the house we live in, I knew that my wife would expect the tools to be taken back to the workshop behind our house after each work session. Thus, the lightweight Makita really filled the bill.

A distinguishing characteristic of a miter saw is the rounded miter index that allows the angle of the blade to be changed relative to the "fence," the bar that holds your stock in place. The protractor-shaped index often has pre-designated "stops" so you can quickly swing the saw head to the angle you want and lock it in place. The Makita LS1040 has nine stops: four to the left and right, and the 90-degree straight cut setting.

I had previously used a friend's mitre saw at a job site, and had experienced some trouble with the grip, which didn't fit my hand very well. So that was definitely one of the features I considered before choosing the Makita. My new saw has a vertical grip design with a thumb-activated safety switch that lets me use the saw comfortably with either hand. The large paddle trigger is easy to squeeze no matter how I'm holding the handle.

Motor and Blade Brake
There are a number of motor sizes used in miter saws. The LS1040 has a 15-amp motor, which is one of the larger motors found on this size of compound mitre saws. I've found that I can easily cut through tough hardwoods with this powerful motor. The saw does not feature the "soft-start" feature found on some-saws, so it does jump a little on startup. I simply have to wait a second or two until the blade has spun up to its full 4600-rpm speed, and then make my cut. This gives me a little extra time to consider the cut I'm about to make, remembering the old adage of "measure twice and cut once.

Another feature I really like on this saw is the electric brake on the blade. These brakes immediately slow the blade when you release the trigger. If a blade does not have an electric brake, it can spin for 10 seconds or longer, which can represent a real hazard to you or to the stock you're removing from the fence. My venerable old table saw (also a Makita) came with the electric brake feature, and has made me a real believer in this safety device.

Miter saw blades come in a variety of materials. Less expensive blades are usually made of steel, and are fine for quick jobs using soft woods such as pine, but they will dull quickly if you're using hard woods like oak. High-speed steel blades will hold an edge longer, but the real ticket is a carbide-tipped blade, which will stay sharpest the longest. I was pleased to see that the Makita LS1040 came with a 40-tooth carbide-tipped blade, perfect for a variety of tasks I'm doing. When I do need to change the blade, there's a shaft lock that immobilizes the blade, making it easier to get a wrench on the blade arbor and loosen it, avoiding nicked fingers.

So, those are the things I looked for when choosing my miter saw: a powerful motor, the ability to make both angle and bevel cuts at the same time, an easy-to-use grip, and safety features like the blade brake. I'm glad l got a durable saw, because once the crown moldings were finished, my wife started thinking about adding a chair rail in several rooms, and I was off to the lumber yard again.

Price
Compound miter saws are more expensive than single-action mitre saws, but the convenience of a one-pass cut for both the angle and the bevel made it the right choice for my jobs. The Makita LS1040 lists for just over 0, but you can usually find it at Amazon or other online stores for less than 0.

Tips On Using The Makita BSS610 Cordless Circular Saw

A circular saw is one of those "must have" tools for most homeowners and for every do-it-yourselfer. It will save you a lot time and effort and easily handle cutting projects that you wouldn't want to tackle with a hand saw. The Makita BSS610 is one of the most highly regarded of the cordless circular saws. Here are a few tips and reminders on using this saw.

Makita Saw Blade

1. When cutting small wood pieces be sure and secure them (e.g., with clamps) to the saw horse or other cutting support that you are using before you begin cutting. This will help you make a straighter and safer cut.

Makita Saw Blade

2. If your saw blade begins to bind (or if you are stopping your saw in the middle of a cut for any reason), release the saw's trigger and do not attempt to remove the saw until the blade has completely stopped moving. If you try and remove the saw before the blade has completely stopped, a saw "kickback" may occur.

3. Keep your saw's blade clean. You can use kerosene, gum remover, or hot water to clean the blade. Never use gasoline! IMPORTANT: Make sure that you have removed the battery from the saw before beginning to remove and clean the saw blade.

4. A circular saw is designed to cut only in a straight line. If you try cutting in other than a straight line, the saw blade will bind or possibly cause a "kickback". Borrow a jig saw, if you need to perform curved cutting.

5. When cutting large wood sheets (e.g., 4' X 8' pieces of plywood), make sure that the wood piece is fully supported so there will be no sag in the wood sheet during your cut. If the wood piece is allowed to sag, your saw will almost certainly bind.

6. Always cut with both hands firmly grasping the saw - one hand on the front grip and one hand on the rear handle.

7. Always remove the battery from the saw before changing a saw blade. After you have removed the old blade (and before installing the new blade), make use of the opportunity to clean out the sawdust and other cutting debris from the upper and lower blade guards. Sawdust/debris has a tendency to accumulate in those two places. Also, when putting on the new saw blade, make sure that the blade's teeth are pointed toward the front of the saw.

8. Like with any saw, never force the cut. Let the saw do the work! Slowly push the circular saw forward as the saw blade cuts the wood.

9. It is prudent to wear a dust mask, ear protection, and safety glasses whenever you are using a circular saw.

10. When adjusting the depth of the saw's cut, set the cut depth so that only a single tooth of the blade is showing below the piece of wood you are cutting.

I hope these tips and reminders will help!

Makita Compound Miter Saw - Buying the Best One on the Market

Woodwork and carpentry are the usual hobbies that most men have. However, for this particular hobby to flourish, it is important to have the right tools to be able to make this hobby possible. One of the tools that most men need is the compound miter saw which is used for cutting and creating important pieces of artwork from wood.

Makita Saw Blade

The best compound miter saw in the market is the Makita Compound Miter Saw. There are a wide array of Makita Compound Miter Saw thus buying them can be challenging since different people need different specifications for this tool. Here are some of the tips that you need to know when buying the best Makita Compound Miter Saw.

Makita Saw Blade

Asses Your Needs

It is important that you look into your needs first in order for you to find out which miter saw is best for you. If you are still starting this hobby, then the small type of the Makita Compound Miter Saw is what you need. However, if you have been doing this craft for a long time, then you are okay using bigger miter saw. Moreover, when assessing your needs, it is important that you also look unto the space of your workplace.

Make Sure That The Miter Saw Has Good Quality Blades

This ensures that your saw will be able to give you a good clean cut so that you will be able to produce fine pieces of woodwork that you can give as gifts to your friends and family. The saw should have 60 or more teeth in its blade to enable to cut smoothly on to the lumber. But then, it is important to take note that the more number of teeth in the blade, the more expensive the saw gets.

Look For Its Safety Features

You need to make sure that the saw that you will be buying has a retractable blade guard for extra protection. Moreover, the Makita Compound Miter Saw of your choice needs to have a lock-off switch in order to prevent accidents. This is extremely important especially if you have children who runs around inside your workshop.

A Brief Profile of the Makita Circular Saw Lineup

One of the most surprising aspects of the Makita circular saw, has to be just how many different types they produce. Now for the sake of simplicity this article is only going to touch on "some" of the non cordless models in their inventory. Saws that run on AC electrical current out of a wall plug.

Makita Saw Blade

I'm not being lazy either because would you believe that they list a total of 16 different types of saws in the AC category? So now you're probably thinking that this is "production line overkill". After all, how many different types of saws are really needed?

Makita Saw Blade

What About Cutting Masonry?

What about a masonry saw? Makita has a durable 5 inch model that packs a powerful 7.9 amp motor to slice right through brick, stone and concrete. One very thoughtful safety feature on this handy unit that's of course used around water, is a GFI breaker that's permanently attached to the end of the plug.

Talk About a Light Wormdrive 7 1/4!

While all the other tool makers have been trying to figure out how to lighten their "affordable" standard 7 1/4 wormdrives, Makita has beat them all to the punch with their amazing 13.2 pound Magnesium Hypoid saw. They shed its weight, by converting to magnesium components. By the way they also have 10.6 pound mag saw.

Finally A Much Safer Beam Saw

The 16 5/8 Makita circular saw definitely takes the danger factor out of cutting thick beams. Face the facts; older style monster saws of this type are downright scary! So whats so different about this beast? How about a state of the art electric blade brake for quick stops and a more powerful 2,200 rpm motor for less risk of cut binding. At 32.1 pounds, it's also lighter too.

Is 6.2 Pounds Light Enough for You?

If you're really looking to shed some weight, the lightest of all Makita circular saw models for cutting wood, is their 6.2 pound 5 1/2 inch "sidewinder". Don't kid yourself either because this unit cuts 1 3/4, which is plenty deep to get through a 2x4. It's 8 amp motor also packs all the power you'll need. It's perfect for framing and pickup!

The Precision Plunge Style Makita Circular Saw

For clean, precision chip free cuts, Makita has two plunge saws in their lineup and they're both 6 ¼ inches. One comes with a mammoth 55" guide rail, and the smaller model has a standard sized deluxe style table. They're both also packed with wizz-bang features like multi operational blade speed control for both setting and maintaining blade speed.

The Newest Makita Miter Saws - Better Than DeWalt?

Visit any construction job site and you're likely to see at least one miter saw being used at any given moment. And most likely, it's going to be yellow in color. DeWalt miter saws are, far and away, the most popular among contractors. But the question is, why? Are they the only ones that do the job well? Or are they better than all the rest?

Makita Saw Blade

The answer to those last two questions is a resounding "NO". But it's unlikely that a guy who spent 0-700 on a miter saw is going to tell someone else it's not the best. So the other guy goes out and buys one, too.

Makita Saw Blade

To demonstrate that there might be better alternatives, let's take a look at the latest generation of Makita slide compound miter saws, the 12 inch LS1216L and it's "little brother" the 10 inch LS1016L:

Both models come with an independent laser guide that can be turned on to check your alignment before you hit the trigger (laser is sold separately for the DeWalt) With Makita's new, unique gear drive design the motor casings are raised up above the usual position, giving you more clearance The LS1216L can handle crown molding up to 8" nested vertically (compared to 6-5/8" on the 12" DeWalt DW718) and baseboard up to 6-1/2", also vertical The LS1016L can handle crown molding up to 6-5/8" and baseboard up to 4-3/4" vertically Both Makita models have a powerful 15 amp motor, electronically controlled so the speed doesn't vary, even when working hard The LS1216L can cross cut up to 15" and the LS1016 up to 12" at 90 degrees Both the 10" and 12" models have innovative adjustable, split fences. The bottom and top portions slide independently to give more support, control and precision to your miter and bevel cuts The slide mechanism on both models has four round rails, riding on ball bearings, to give you smooth yet rigid movement and more accurate cuts (DeWalt uses only two rails) Each one has nine positive stops for miter cuts and seven for bevel cuts The price of the LS1216L is about the same as the DeWalt DW718 but it has more features Makita LS1016L and LS1216L dual bevel slide compound miter saws are built with typical Makita quality, durability and ease of use. One customer, writing a review of a Makita miter saw said: "Best saw I've ever used." Another said after using one of their miter saws, he changed all his power tools to Makita. And that's probably not a bad idea.
