A table saw is one of the most frequently used machines in a workshop which when properly used can guarantee accurate, straight and precise cutting of materials. It is a multi purpose tool. It is mounted on a table top or edge of a table with the circular blade protruding out on top. This blade is connected to a powerful motor via a belt or gear assembly. The blade rotates at high speeds and is used to cut materials, usually wood. Table top saws have been around for a long time now and various versions or types of table top saws are available in the market. Modern saws also contain adjustable blade mechanism to vary the depth of cut.
Some of the different types of table top saws are:
Makita Saw Blade
Bench top saws - They are light weight, portable and made up of plastic and steel. Being cheap in comparison to other types of table saws they are more commonly used in small workshops. Though they are small they provide high accuracy. The blade is directly connected to a motor and no drive assembly is used thus making the saw compact.
Contractor table saw - They are larger and heavier and are mounted on a frame. Motor and blade are connected via belt assembly. They work fine on home circuits.
Cabinet table saws - They are very heavy and mounted on a frame with wheels. The blade is connected to the motor via parallel v belt assembly. The frame around the motor is covered inside a cabinet. This helps in collection of saw dust and being heavy these saws provide very high accuracy. But they are comparatively costly. Heavy duty circuits (220 v) are required
Hybrid saws - Hybrid saws combine the good points of all the above three types of saws and make them available at cheaper rates. They are usually a mixture of cabinet and contractor saws.
There are various kinds of table top accessories available in the market. One of the main accessories is the fence. A fence is used to feed the wooden plank to the saw's blade. So it is extremely necessary to ensure that the rip fence is aligned parallel to the blade. Only then will the wood be cut straight and accurately. Many rip fence sizes are available in the market today but the most commonly used are in the range of 30 to 50 inches. If smaller shop space is available the 30 inch fence proves to be just about enough for almost all the cutting tasks. Other essential accessories involve a table top stand for ease of transportation and to make the cutting process more comfortable. Safety accessories are also important. An anti kickback roller is essential to safeguard against kickbacks which occur when the blade suddenly throws back the cutting material towards the operator. Other safety materials involve hand guard, blade guard etc. A miter gauge is also used to enhance accuracy and for precision cutting. Different types of blades are also available for different types of cuts.
You should always be careful while using a table saw and make sure that you use hand guards to feed the blade with wood. A bit of safety and the right accessories will help you convert wood into art.
