Chain Saw Maintenance Tips

If you own a chain saw, it is important to ensure that you work to maintain it. Many individuals believe that if the saw is not in use, maintenance does not need to occur. However, it is important to maintain the product that you own whether you are using it or are not using it. The first step when it comes to maintaining this type of power tool is ensuring that the blade that is being used is kept sharp. In order to ensure that this is achieved, you may purchase a special sharpening tool. This is a highly beneficial tool that is relatively inexpensive.

Makita Saw Blade

When maintaining your saw, it is essential to check the area that holds and distributes the fuel that is required to power the device. The area should have no debris in it at all. You should understand that the fuel that is used is a combination of gas and of oil.

Makita Saw Blade

You should refer to the manufacturing paperwork that came with your saw to determine the appropriate ratio and work to always use that ratio. You should also check the filter on the saw to ensure that there is no debris and it has not become clogged with the fuel mixture. If it has, it could reduce the overall performance of the device.

When maintaining you chain saw, be certain to evaluate the chain on a regular basis. You should ensure that it is tight and that all the teeth are on the chain. You should also look to see if there is visible evidence that the chain teeth are wearing down.

If so, you may need to replace the chain in order to make precision cuts. If you pay attention to the details outlined in this maintenance guide, you will quickly find that the saw performs at an optimal level.

Chain Saw Cutting Problems

Chain saws are wonderful tools when they are cutting properly. Most people know that when a chain saw gets dull it does not cut very easily, and in fact can become quite dangerous. But, there are a number of other problems that can cause your chain saw to cut poorly. Most of these issues can be traced back to improper sharpening procedures or poor maintenance.

Makita Saw Blade

When you're cutting with your chain saw, if it cuts crooked or at an angle this is generally an indication that the teeth have been improperly filed. Either they were filed at the wrong angle, or every tooth was not filed the same amount and with the same pressure. If filing is not the cause of a chainsaw pulling to one side or the other, then it could be the bar or the sprocket at the far end of the bar are in poor condition and need maintenance or straightening.

Makita Saw Blade

If you have a newly sharpened chain saw and it dulls quickly, usually this is caused by thin cutting edges resulting from too much file pressure or low angle when sharpening your chain saw. Your chainsaw will need to be refiled using less pressure, as well as lowering the angle of attack and checking the height of the depth gauges.

If the chain grabs and cuts rough the saw sharpener probably induced a forward hook on the teeth as a result of too much pressure from the top of the file. A good indication that the depth gauges are set incorrectly is when the chain digs too far into the wood. You will need to lower the height of the depth gauges in most cases. If you detect overheating of the chain you may not have enough bar oil, or the saw sharpener created a backslope on the teeth during the last sharpening.

Drive link problems on the chain can result in severe problems like the chain jumping off the bar. Incorrect chain tension can cause this, and you may have to replace bent drive links on your chain. Also, excessive chain chatter can be caused by improper sprocket fit, and result in front or back peened drive links.

Whenever you identify these kinds of cutting problems with your chain saw you should immediately remove the bar and chain from the saw and inspect carefully. There are usually only a couple of nuts to remove the chain and separate the bar from the saw. This will allow you to inspect the parts for dangerous defects and keep your saw in good condition.

Hitachi Table Saws - Model Highlights

Hitachi is an international company, but the United States headquarters is located in Atlanta, Georgia. Hitachi products are available in almost 4000 retail stores with service centers numbering over a thousand. Hitachi claims on their website to have the best power tools available for professional use.

Makita Saw Blade

The United States branch of the Hitachi Corporation has been independently operating since 1948. However, their affiliation with the parent company affords Hitachi the advantages of quick access to new technology that is developed in other fields but can also advance the efficiency and performance of power tools. Because of Hitachi's expertise in metallurgy, plastics, and casting, this company can make power tools that are easier to use as well as faster in performance and more durable for long term use.

Makita Saw Blade

Hitachi uses a three dimensional computer aided design (CAD) system to build its power tools in virtuality before building a live prototype. By using this virtual prototype, Hitachi can do extensive analysis to find out where the most likely failures will happen. In this virtual setting the power tools can be tested for strength, vibration resistance, effects of impact, effects of harsh environmental conditions, and effectiveness of safety features. This process saves time and money by eliminating the need to build a real prototype and test it just to find that they have to go back to the designing board to start all over again.

This design system has led to improvements such as a cooling system that allows the tools to run for longer periods of time without burning out. Another technological advance improves the balance so that tools are lighter and easier to maneuver.

Hitachi's table saws benefit from all of these designs and advances. They offer three different models of table saws for various levels of work conditions.

1. C10FL 10" Stationary Table Saw

This table saw is built for long rip cuts and repeated cross cuts. It has a 3 horsepower motor that is fully encased to protect it from the damages of dust and debris. The blade adjustment knobs are conveniently located on the front of the table saw. It includes a tabletop angle scale, T-slot miter gauge, and caster set, as well as a dust collection hook-up.

2. C10FR 10" Job site Table Saw

This table saw is designed to do most of the same work as the stationary table saw but with some added features for portability. This model includes an LED light to make it easier to see the piece you are working on. It also has a cut indicator, miter gauge with nine positive stops, a dust chute, and a handy fold-and-roll stand to make moving the whole table saw easy.

3. C10RA2 Table Saw with Stand

This portable table saw is somewhat smaller than the previous two models. The motor is 2.6 horsepower with a locking rip fence and front and rear guide bars. Safety features include a clear blade guard, a splitter that directs the split wood away from the user, an anti-kickback feature, and an electric brake. The tabletop is smaller, but this table saw only weights 64 pounds.

Hitachi warrants portable tools for five years and stationary tools for two years for the original owner. Any accessories are warranted for thirty days.

The company web site includes many positive testimonials from satisfied customers. Hitachi is a well-known table saw manufacturer with many retailers around the United States, so you are sure to find one of their table saws that might fit your needs.

In Review: Bosch's GTS1031 10" Worksite Table Saw

Where superior performance and innovation is concerned, Bosch is one of those manufacturers that just doesn't mess around. Building power tools and equipment that essentially embody efficient design and innovative, evolved functionality, Bosch is a tried and true source for exceptional power tools and woodworking equipment. Recently releasing a new jobsite table saw with a focus on providing greater power and capacity with a smaller more portable package, Bosch suggests that effective power and performance can be harnessed outside of stationary or cumbersome equipment.

Makita Saw Blade

This new worksite table saw, the GTS1031, in fact, can be carried around with only one hand. Thanks to the saw's optimal balance, body design, and ergonomic handle-grip, the saw can be transported from the shop to the jobsite, up some stairs, down some stairs, around the corner, and back to the jobsite again with relative ease and convenience. The table saw weighs 52-lbs (slightly heavier than some comparable jobsite table saws, but the few extra pounds are negligible when one considers the additional capacity and durability precautions this saw provides) and with rubber feet on its side and base, the saw can be stored safely and comfortably either vertically or horizontally.

Makita Saw Blade

The saw's base, despite its durable, all metal design, is lightweight and incorporates the aforementioned carry handle to ensure industrial durability and optimum portability, and because the saw also offers complete under table storage (for the included rip fence, miter gauge, blade-change wrenches, push stick and Smart Guard components) the table saw remains compact and efficient. The GTA500, the stand for the table saw (sold separately), is also engineered for compact convenience and optimal storage and portability.

The Squarelock rip fence on this table saw is designed for superior accuracy, for "maximum trueness," as Bosch would say, rendering the Squrelock the best-in-class fence for its smooth gliding, dead-on accuracy, and solid, consistent high-performance cutting. The fence also clamps securely to both the front and back rails and squares itself automatically. The saw's Smart Guard system, consisting of an innovated modular blade guard, anti-kick-back pawls and a 3-position riving knife (these install without tools), additionally offers superior control over each cut and smooth, seamless operation. The saw additionally features a tool-free dust chute clear-out with simple access on the back of the saw.

So, the GTS1031 is compact and deadly accurate, but the thing is also terrifically powerful. It's powered by a gorgeous 15-amp motor (with 4.0 max horse power) that produces 5,000 (no load) RPM - more power than their full-sized worksite table saw (the 4100) which produces only 3,650 RPM. The saw additionally has a -2 - 47-degree bevel angle range, a 1/2" wide dado capacity, a depth of cut (at 90-degrees) of 3-1/8," and (thanks to an expandable table top) an impressive ripping capacity of 18" to the right and 7-3/4" to the left. It's awesome.

Miter Saw Reviews - The Hitachi C12LSH 12 Inch Slider

We're having a look at the big dogs first, so the first tool we're featuring in our series of miter saw reviews is the Hitachi C12LSH 12 inch slider.

Makita Saw Blade

This saw is an absolute beast, and it looks like one too...I can't decide whether it looks more like a 68-pound BMX decal, or the slime-green Seahawks jerseys. Anyway, someone at Hitachi thought this Predator-styling was cool, and I don't mind as long as they keep making 'em like this one...In the interest of full disclosure, I have always been a big fan of Hitachi saws, and this one doesn't disappoint.

Makita Saw Blade

If you've read the miter saw reviews in a magazine like Fine Homebuilding, you know that a saw this size has plenty of power to spare. This model boasts a 15 amp belt driven motor with a soft start and smooth operation, with virtually no blade wobble. I have to say that I hated the blade that came with a saw, but once I switched it for a 12" Forrest Chopmaster the cut was glass-smooth (for half the price of the Forrest blade, I think the Ridgid titanium blades available at the Depot do a nice job).

The new feature on the C12LSH model is the LCD dispay screen mounted on a flexible arm above the blade, which gives you a digital readout of the miter and bevel settings. I guess this is a nice feature, but I don't think I will use it as much as the laser guide, which is super-accurate once you dial it in. Hitachi was the first manufacturer to put these on all their saws, and for my money this one is the easiest to adjust and to see in daylight if you're working outside. Just remember that the laser lines up with the left side of the blade if you're cutting off to the right.

Another cool feature is the a micro-adjustment wheels for both the miter and bevel settings, which allow you to literally "dial in" a half a degree without moving the saw.

Here's something that you may not have discovered if you've seen any other miter saw reviews of this tool: the feature that sets this tool apart apart from the rest is the zero-clearance dual rail system. This lets you set the saw up flush against a wall, without banging the back of the rails into the wall to finish the cut.

This isn't the easiest tool to haul out of your truck and up a ladder...At 68 pounds, I think it's even heavier than the Bosch 12" slider. For this reason, this saw would be right at home set up in a cabinet shop. However, I would sure miss it on the job installing those cabinets, and would have to bring it along.

Watch out...this tool might spoil you for any other saw in it's class!

Mulcher Blades

With the advancement of technology today, we definitely have so much to thank about the introduction of high-powered gardening tools as opposed to the manual grass cutters, rakes and other gardening tools. These incredible machines make our garden more beautiful and healthy. Mulchers, together with the shredders and chippers that are now available in the market or online, are indeed a breakthrough in gardening, landscaping, composting, etc.

Makita Saw Blade

There are several companies who manufacture simple gardening tools to the most innovative and heavy-duty gardening machines. There are several brands and models that one can choose from. For those who want stress-free shopping, the internet is the most helpful tool. All you need to do is log on to a certain search engine, type in "mulchers" and after a second, several results will show up. You can then breeze through the results and check out those sites dedicated for buyers. If you want to narrow your search right away, you can do so by choosing the product you want by price range, by brand, by power voltage, or if you want a gas powered or an electric mulcher. If you're a built apprehensive on the performance of the ones that you have chosen or set aside, then you can check if there are certain reviews or testimonials included in each of the website. Accessories and spare parts can also be found in these sites.

Makita Saw Blade

What is one of the most important part of an effective mulcher? Undeniably, the answer would be the blades. Without it cutting and clipping is impossible. Choose mulcher blades that are hand-straightened for precision cutting. If you're shopping at a local store or outlet, you can ask the sales person for this kind of blade. This type of blade is advised by most mulcher users. The blades' teeth should be able to cut clippings three or four times, this will reduce the amount of clippings about 40 percent to 60 percent. Mulcher blades should be made of high-carbon boron-alloy steel; this type of blade will wear out longer and also stays sharp longer. Ideal mulcher blades should show that they are made of 10B38 steels. This means that the blade had undergone heat treatment. Make sure that the they are properly placed in between the teeth before purchasing. This will ensure better cutting. The blades should always be clean and free from moist. There are cleansing agents available in the market to help you make sure that the blades are well-kept. Rocks and sand can also damage the blades so it is advised that you check the surface that you're about to mow. Remember; if the mulcher parts function well, the whole machine works efficiently and it will definitely last longer.

Mulcher blades also vary; it actually depends on what type of mulcher you have. There are those that require rotating blades and some requires double blades. But no matter what type of blade is used, to be able to enhance your mulchers' performance you should always check that the parts are in good working condition.
